So, what actually is NLP?
NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming, offers practical ways to explore how you think, communicate, create meaning and develop patterns of feeling and behaviour.
Two people can experience the same situation and leave with very different interpretations.
We do not respond only to what happens. We also respond to the meaning we give it through our beliefs, previous experiences, expectations, language and attention.
NLP helps you notice more of this process. Recognising a pattern may give you more choice in how you respond.
What could learning NLP help you explore?
Greater awareness of your patterns
Become more aware of the assumptions, beliefs and habitual responses influencing how you experience situations.
More flexibility under pressure
Explore how your thoughts, attention and physical responses interact when pressure rises, and practise additional ways of approaching those moments.
Clearer communication
Develop your ability to listen closely, express what you mean and notice where different interpretations may be creating misunderstanding.
More useful questions
Learn to move beyond immediate reassurance or advice and ask questions that may create greater clarity.
A broader understanding of others
Become more curious about how another person may be thinking, communicating or interpreting the same situation differently.
More intentional choices
Recognise some of the patterns influencing your decisions and consider whether other responses may now be available.

Course structure
What will you learn during the eight-day NLP Practitioner Course?
Across the eight days, learning takes place through explanation, live demonstrations, guided practice, reflection and exercises based on recognisable conversations and situations.
No previous knowledge of NLP is expected. Each area is introduced in plain English before participants explore the related NLP models and practise applying them.
Understand how people think

How this can show up in life
Someone sends you a message saying, “Can we talk later?”
One person assumes something is wrong. They replay recent conversations and spend the next few hours wondering what they have done.
Another person assumes the sender is busy and continues with their day.
The words are identical, but each person creates a different meaning from them.
Recognising this process may help you notice your own assumptions and become more curious about how someone else could be experiencing the same situation.
Models and skills explored
- NLP Communication Model
- Map and Territory Distinction
- Meta Programs
- Personal outcome work
Notice more in conversations
Communication involves more than the words someone chooses. You will practise paying closer attention to tone, pace, body language and subtle changes in how a person responds.
You will also explore ways to build rapport and adjust your communication while remaining genuine.

How this can show up in life
You ask someone whether they are comfortable with a decision.
They say, “Yes, that’s fine,” but their voice becomes quieter, they look away and they stop contributing to the conversation.
You could accept the words and move on. You could also assume you know what their body language means.
A more considered response may be to notice that something has shifted and ask, “What are you thinking about as we discuss this?”
The aim is not to guess what someone is thinking. It is to notice more and check your understanding.
Models and skills explored
- Sensory Acuity
- Eye Accessing Cues
- VAKAd Test
- Advanced Listening Fundamentals
- Rapport
- Pacing and Leading
- Matching and Mirroring
Work with your state
Your emotional and mental state can influence how you think, communicate and behave. You will explore how different states may arise and practise working with them more intentionally.
This is not about feeling positive all the time. It is about noticing what is happening within you and exploring additional ways to respond.

How this can show up in life
You have prepared carefully for a presentation, job interview or important conversation. You know what you want to say.
Then the moment arrives. Your breathing changes, your thoughts speed up and the words do not come as easily as they did while you were practising.
This may not be a lack of preparation or knowledge. A change in your state may be influencing how easily you can access what you know.
You will explore ways to notice that shift and reconnect with a state that may be more useful for the situation in front of you.
Models and skills explored
- State Management
- State Anchoring
- State Induction
- Meta States
Ask clearer questions
The language someone uses can offer clues about how they are organising an experience.
You will practise listening for generalisations, assumptions and missing information, then asking questions that may make the conversation more precise. You will also explore how language can direct attention, influence meaning and open new possibilities.

How this can show up in life
Someone says, “Nobody listens to me in meetings.”
You could reassure them, disagree or immediately offer advice. You could also become curious.
Who specifically are they referring to? What happens when they try to contribute? Has there been a meeting where they did feel heard? What would listening look like to them?
A broad frustration can feel difficult to address. A more precise conversation may reveal a particular situation, person or pattern that can be explored.
Models and skills explored
- Meta Model
- Milton Model
- Reverse Meta Model
- Meta Questions
- Language Patterns
- Chunking
Explore beliefs, values and identity
Beliefs and values can influence what people pursue, avoid and consider possible. You will explore how these patterns may shape motivation, decisions and how you see yourself.
You will also practise examining beliefs without assuming they are simply right or wrong.

How this can show up in life
You are already exhausted, but someone asks you for another favour and you hear yourself saying yes.
Part of you wants to decline. Another part says, “A good person doesn’t let people down,” or, “If I say no, they’ll think I’m selfish.”
What looks like a time-management problem may also involve a belief about what it means to be helpful, reliable or worthy of someone else’s approval.
Examining the belief does not mean deciding that helping people is wrong. It creates an opportunity to consider whether other ways of honouring that value may also be available.
Models and skills explored
- Belief Change
- Values and Identity
- Meta Yes/No Pattern
- Logical Levels
- Frame Intelligence
See situations from more than one perspective
When you are caught inside a difficult situation, your interpretation can feel like the only reasonable one.
You will practise stepping back, considering other viewpoints and noticing options that may not have been visible from your original position.

How this can show up in life
You leave a difficult conversation convinced the other person dismissed what you were trying to say.
They leave believing you were not interested in hearing their perspective.
Later, you both replay the conversation and find more reasons to support your original interpretation.
Exploring your perspective, the other person’s possible perspective and the position of an outside observer may reveal assumptions, intentions and missed signals that were difficult to notice in the moment.
The purpose is not to decide that one person was right and the other was wrong. It is to develop a fuller picture of what may have happened and consider what you could do next.
Models and skills explored
- NLP Perceptual Positions
- Native Perspectives
- Content and Context
- Five Basic Frames
- Reframing Criticism
Bring the learning into purposeful conversations
The final area brings the skills together through structured conversations that may support reflection, awareness and change.
The focus is on practising how NLP can be used thoughtfully and responsibly in coaching, leadership, work, relationships and personal development.

Someone says they want to feel more confident.
That may sound clear, but confidence can mean different things to different people. Do they want to contribute during meetings, have a difficult conversation, apply for a new role or spend less time second-guessing their decisions?
Instead of immediately offering advice, you can help them explore what confidence might look like in a specific situation, what may be getting in the way and what a meaningful next step could be.
The conversation becomes less about telling someone what to do and more about helping them clarify what they want and how they may begin moving towards it.
Models and skills explored
- Well-Formed Outcomes
- POWER Model
- Timeline Pattern
- Strategies and Modelling
- Original Swish Pattern
- TOTE Model
- Anchoring with TOTE

NLP Practitioner FAQs
Common questions about NLP Practitioner training
What is an NLP Practitioner Course?
An NLP Practitioner Course is a structured training program that introduces the foundations of Neuro Linguistic Programming. It explores how people use language, create meaning, access state, form beliefs and respond to the world around them. The Coaching Room’s NLP Practitioner Course is delivered face-to-face across eight days in Sydney and Melbourne.
Is this NLP course accredited?
The Coaching Room is an accredited NLP training provider. Our NLP Practitioner Course is recognised by NLPAA, ANLP, INSA and CPD, and meets the required international standards and guidelines for NLP Practitioner training.
What is the difference between Neuro Linguistic Programming and Natural Language Processing?
Both can be shortened to NLP, but they refer to different fields. Neuro Linguistic Programming is a coaching and communication approach focused on language, meaning, behaviour, state and patterns of response. Natural Language Processing is a field within artificial intelligence and computer science focused on how machines process and generate language. The Coaching Room’s NLP Practitioner Course teaches Neuro Linguistic Programming.
What are beginner NLP exercises?
Beginner NLP exercises often focus on awareness, communication, rapport, state and language. In our NLP Practitioner Course, you’ll practise skills such as rapport building, sensory awareness, Eye Accessing Cues, VAKAd observation, listening for language patterns, reframing, perceptual positions, state access, state anchoring and asking more precise coaching questions.
How do I become certified as an NLP Practitioner in Australia?
To become certified as an NLP Practitioner in Australia, you would usually complete an NLP Practitioner training program with a recognised NLP training provider. The Coaching Room’s NLP Practitioner Course is delivered face-to-face across eight days in Sydney and Melbourne and is designed to support students to learn, practise and apply NLP skills in a live training environment.
What should I look for in an NLP certification course?
When comparing NLP certification courses, look for clear training standards, experienced trainers, live practice, transparent course inclusions, post-course support and a provider that explains what NLP can and cannot be used for. Our course covers specific, named models and techniques — including the Meta Model, Meta Programs, Sensory Acuity, Perceptual Positions, State Anchoring, Meta States, Belief Change, Frame Intelligence, the Milton Model, the Swish Pattern and the TOTE Model — so you’re learning concrete, applicable skills rather than generic communication or self-awareness training.
Is NLP used for coaching?
NLP is often used in coaching, leadership, communication and personal development because it gives people a way to explore language, state, meaning and behavioural patterns. The Coaching Room teaches NLP as a developmental and coaching-based approach. It is not presented as therapy or a replacement for mental health care.
Is NLP Practitioner the same as NLP prac?
Some people use NLP prac as shorthand for NLP Practitioner training.
How much does the NLP Practitioner Course cost?
Normally $3,449 ex GST; however, we do have an early-bird offer of $2,414.30 ex GST with code EARLY30. This includes 12 months of access to our NLP Practitioner Online Live recordings, with over 50 hours of content, plus lifetime revisit access — so your investment keeps working for you well beyond the 8 days.
Can I speak with someone before booking?
Yes. You can book a free clarity call with The Coaching Room team to talk through the course, your reasons for exploring NLP and whether this training feels like the right next step.
