3 Things You Need to Know in Every Coaching Conversation

If you are a coach, a coach in training, or just want to have conversations that matter and change lives, there are three things you need to know: present state, desired state, and contract state.

The present state refers to the present situation. If clients are coming with something they want to change or resolve, this would be where they are currently. In this state, be careful not to get caught up in their ideas, abstractions, and concepts.

Next is the desired state. This is where you determine what mindset, emotional, or behavioural changes need to take place to get to the desired state. Identify what it is that the clients need to change and what it is that they want in the desired situation.

Once you have identified the present and desired states, you move to the contract state. Here you identify the obstacles between where clients are and where they want to be, present state versus desired state.

In this video James Hayes, Director of Coaching and Public Trainings here at The Coaching Room, will take you through:

  • How to coach with specificity
  • Understanding the three states of coaching situations
  • Seeing more in the contract state
  • Helping clients move from the present state to the desired state by overcoming the contract state
